No. 150/1997 Dentists Act 1972 Dentists (Dental Auxiliaries) Regulations 1997 The Governor in Council, on the recommendation of The Dental Board of Victoria, makes the following Regulations: Dated: 9 December 1997 Responsible Minister: ROB KNOWLES Minister for Health SHARNE BRYAN Clerk of the Executive Council 1. Objective The objective of these Regulations is to make further provision for the licensing of dental auxiliaries. 2. Authorising provisions These Regulations are made under sections 9 and 29 of the Dentists Act 1972. 3. Principal Regulations In these Regulations, the Dentists Regulations 19921 are called the Principal Regulations. 4. Substitution of heading For the heading to Division 1 in Part 5 of the Principal Regulations, substitute "Division 1— Dental Therapists". -- 2 of 6 -- S.R. No. 150/1997 Dentists (Dental Auxiliaries) Regulations 1997 2 5. Substitution of regulation 501 For regulation 501 of the Principal Regulations substitute— "501. Training, examinations and standards (1) For the purposes of section 29(2) of the Act, the prescribed courses of training and prescribed examinations for the grant of a licence to a person to practise as a dental therapist are— (a) the course of training and the examinations conducted by the School of Dental Therapy, Department of Health and Community Services or Department of Human Services in Victoria, the successful completion of which leads to the issue of a certificate of qualification as a school dental therapist or dental therapist by the person in charge of the School of Dental Therapy; or (b) the course of training and the examinations conducted by The University of Melbourne, the successful completion of which leads to the issue of a Diploma in Oral Health Therapy (Dental Therapy) by The University of Melbourne. (2) For the purposes of section 29(7)(a) of the Act, the prescribed standard for the grant of a licence to a person to practise as a dental therapist is that the person have an adequate command of the English language.". 6. Dental therapists r. 5 -- 3 of 6 -- S.R. No. 150/1997 Dentists (Dental Auxiliaries) Regulations 1997 3 In regulations 502 and 503 of the Principal Regulations for "school dental therapist" (wherever occurring) substitute "dental therapist". 7. Substitution of regulation 504 For regulation 504 of the Principal Regulations substitute— "504. Training, examinations and standards (1) For the purposes of section 29(2) of the Act, the prescribed course of training and prescribed examinations for the grant of a licence to practise as a dental hygienist are— (a) the course of training and the examinations conducted by the Gilles Plains College of TAFE, South Australia, the successful completion of which leads to the issue of a certificate of qualification as a dental hygienist by the person in charge of the Dental Hygienist course; or (b) the course of training and the examinations conducted by the New South Wales Dental Board, the successful completion of which leads to the issue of a certificate of qualification as a dental hygienist by the person in charge of the Dental Hygienist's registration examination conducted by the New South Wales Dental Board; or (c) the course of training and the examinations conducted by The University of Melbourne, the successful completion of which leads to the issue of a Diploma in Oral Health Therapy -- 4 of 6 -- S.R. No. 150/1997 Dentists (Dental Auxiliaries) Regulations 1997 4 (Dental Hygiene) by The University of Melbourne. (2) For the purposes of section 29(7)(a) of the Act, the prescribed standard for the grant of a licence to a person to practise as a dental hygienist is that the person have an adequate command of the English language.". 8. Term of licences For regulation 508 of the Principal Regulations substitute— "A licence to practise as a dental auxiliary— (a) remains in force until 30 June next after the date of issue unless cancelled or suspended sooner; and (b) is renewable from year to year unless any cancellation or suspension is in force.". 9. Renewal of licences In regulation 509 of the Principal Regulations for "each licensed school dental therapist and licensed dental hygienist" substitute "each person licensed to practise as a dental auxiliary". ═══════════════ r. 8 -- 5 of 6 -- S.R.
